The 54 fiberglass sculptures of cats in the street exhibit “Cat’n around Catskill” in Catskill, Greene County, NY were created by local artists and will be on display for the duration of the 2021 summer.
Sculptures were up in Catskill streets by Memorial Day and in September they will be auctioned to the public at an outdoor site. Catskill has been having street art exhibits since 2007.
Proceeds from the auctions go to charitable causes with a portion of each sale going to the artist. “Cat’n around Catskill” is organized by the Heart of the Catskill Association. In 2019, auction bids for the cats started at $500 while the average auction price was $1,600, and the highest priced cat sold for $7,600. About 250 people attended the auction.
Greene County has four different street-art projects, all currently making a comeback from last year’s COVID-19 hindrances. All displays this year feature animals — cats in Catskill, owls in Coxsackie, bears in Cairo, and ducks in Greenville.
