Almost 20 years after his death, Paul Newman is still churning out hits.
The co-op unit he shared with his wife, Joanne Woodward, recently traded hands for about $14 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The sale of the 1120 Fifth Avenue apartment in Carnegie Hill represented a premium on the property’s $9.95 million asking price; interest was immediate, as a contract was signed within weeks of the listing in December.
The identity of the buyer was not disclosed, other than that it is a couple who works in finance. Newman and Woodware bought the pad in the 1980s, reconfiguring it to have a single bedroom while turning the other bedroom into a library. They ultimately used the apartment as a pied-à-terre.
Newman, star of films such as “The Color of Money,” died in 2008. Woodward is still alive and lives in Westport, Connecticut, but does not make public appearances after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease the year before her husband’s death.
The 3,000-square-foot unit traded for $4,667 per square foot. The one-bedroom unit takes up half of the top floor of the 15-story building. The unit includes original details such as kitchen tile and wallpaper, though the sole bedroom is in need of renovation.
Douglas Elliman’s Noble Black and Jennifer Stillman had the listing. Black claimed more than 50 prospective buyers toured the apartment after its listing and nearly a dozen submitted offers, leading to a bidding war. One potential buyer even offered above $14 million, but fears of a rejection from the co-op board led the Newman family to rebuff the offer; that prospective buyer did not plan to use the unit as their primary residence.
Brown Harris Stevens’ Maria Pashby, Joanna Pashby and Wendy Sarasohn represented the buyers.
Elsewhere in Carnegie Hill, Lawrence and Ann Smith paid $12 million for Perry and Donna Golkin’s unit at 14 East 90th Street, the top deal of the day on Tuesday. Perry is a private equity investor and Donna is co-chair of Achilles International, a nonprofit aiming to break down barriers in athletics for those with disabilities.
