Frank Lloyd Wright’s Plaza Hotel Condo Snags Contract

The former Plaza Hotel home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright appears to have snagged a buyer.

Unit 409 at the iconic Central Park South property has entered into contract, the New York Post reported. The four-bedroom unit with Central Park views was listed in February for $18.9 million.

Charlie Attias of Compass represented the sellers, Hudson Capital Properties founder James Cohen and DuJour Magazine home editor Lisa Cohen. The brokers involved in the deal declined to disclose the sale price and the identity of the buyer, the Post reported.

The Cohens bought the condo at 1 Central Park South in 2009 for $13 million and did an extensive renovation, according to the Post. The couple used it as a pied-à-terre.

The 4,000-square-foot condo has 13-foot ceilings, Venetian plaster walls, custom moldings and mosaic tilework. Amenities in the 21-story building include a concierge, butler, 24-hour in-room dining and twice-daily housekeeping.

Wright lived in the unit, then a hotel suite, from 1954 to 1959 with his wife Olgivanna Lloyd Wright. The famed architect, who was supervising the construction of the Guggenheim Museum, played host to the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller and King Faisal II of Iraq.

Elad Properties bought the landmarked Plaza in 2003 and converted it into 163 condos and a hotel. It was one of the hottest properties in town and home to the likes of billionaire Robert Kraft and developer Harry Macklowe.

But the Plaza started to lose its luster as billionaires decamped to newer buildings with more amenities. There are currently 28 units listed for sale, according to StreetEasy.
