Ukraine’s war veterans can now add their official credentials to the country’s rapidly evolving mobile ID app.
The Diia application, developed by the Ukrainian government, is a digital platform that centralizes various public services, aiming to streamline and simplify interactions between citizens and government agencies. It offers a wide range of services, including digital versions of official documents like driver’s licenses and passports, making it easier for users to access and manage their documentation.
Diia’s new digital Veteran ID is available to combatants, war-disabled individuals, participants in the Revolution of Dignity, and other veterans. The digital ID eliminates the need for physical documents and provides a more secure and convenient way to verify veteran status and access associated benefits. Such benefits include free public transport, medical services, educational opportunities, and administrative services.
To obtain the digital Veteran ID, users need to update their Diia app, add the relevant document, and input the necessary personal information. This process is designed to be user-friendly and efficient, ensuring that veterans can quickly and easily obtain their ID without having to navigate complex bureaucratic procedures.
The Diia app was first launched in 2020 by Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation, which was aiming at the time to offer similar functionality to that of Apple’s mobile ID app. But it rapidly evolved into something more expansive in the wake of Russia’s invasion.
Upgraded functionality allowed users to change their registered address and access cash subsidies for those fleeing combat zones. The app has also supported those leaving the country by providing remote work listings and enabling the use of the mobile ID in neighboring countries that have agreements with Ukraine.
Moreover, Diia has incorporated militarized capabilities to support the Ukrainian defense efforts. Users can upload location-tagged photos of Russian targets and submit tips about potential saboteurs, with this information being relayed to Ukrainian military intelligence. The app also facilitates donations to the Ukrainian military.
These enhancements illustrate the flexibility and power of digital ID and mobile ID technology in maintaining government services and aiding citizens during crises.
